The need for a non-hormonal male contraception
More than 33 of the 208 million pregnancies that occur annually worldwide are unintended. About 20 % of pregnancies end in induced abortions (1). WHO estimates that over 120 million couples do not use contraceptives although they want to limit their childbearing (2). This is in large explained by an unmet need for contraception. It has been shown that couples with access to family planning services choose to have smaller families. This makes parents able to offer more time and resources to each child and thereby improve their health and quality of life.
In the developing world, complications from pregnancy and childbirth are the leading causes of death among women of reproductive age. In 2000, WHO estimated that 529 000 women worldwide die from these complications, 99% of them in developing countries. These numbers are in correlation with the lack of modern contraceptives (3).
Spermatech is devoted to improve the life of women and children in developing countries. A non-hormonal male contraceptive could help families where female hormonal methods are inaccessible, receives lack of acceptance or cause unwanted side effects.
